One of the craziest nights in London Road history

-

This was one of the more remarkable nights in London Road’s rich history, and not just because Posh won a game.

The 2-1 success over Walsall was played out in snowfall levels ranging from a light fluttering to a blizzard, and only finished because a couple of Posh players joined the heroic groundstaff in sweeping the pitch-markings clear when referee Lee Swaby was considering an abandonment 10 minutes from time.

‘Defenders clearing their lines effectively’ and ‘Steven Taylor playing a different sort of sweeper’ were among the lines to trend on twitter after a match that was richly entertaining considering the obvious handicap.

Walsall struck early through Julien Ngoy and when Marcus Maddison delivered a candidate for ‘worst penalty of all time’ a couple of minutes later, the majority in an understandably low crowd

(the lowest for a Football League game at London Road since the dark days of 1989) feared the worst.

But Posh rallied and played pretty well either side of half-time. They were rewarded with Omar Bogle’s first goal for the club and Taylor pinching a goal off fellow defender Jack Baldwin. They couldn’t put the game to bed though and they were forced to fight through some scary moments which included Luke Leahy hitting the crossbar from a corner before celebrating victory.

Sweeper Steven Taylor cleared his lines effectively.
