Variety show adds spice to Rotary

As William Cowper famously said: “Variety is the Spice of Life”. I could only agree when I had the pleasure of being in the audience at Huntingdon Cromwell Rotary’s annual Vaudeville Evening at Buckden Village Hall.

What an amazing evening of variety entertainment.

It was a sell out with around 170 enjoying the show this year.

The programme featured singers, dancers, live bands, a ventriloquist, other solo acts and the Upwood Ukuleles.

Rotary Voices (our own choir) were one of the acts taking to the stage during the evening.

Some of the audience were reduced to tears during the moving performances by talented young singers Charlie McLellan and Lana Willis (fresh from the West End) and later on tears of laughter when ventriloquist Chris Bylett introduced Desmond the Duck with his own brand of humour.

In addition to wonderful entertainment everyone tucked into a Waitrose ploughman’s supper during the interval. Each performer made their appearance free of charge. As a result, along with a raffle, more than £1,500 was raised to support Rotary’s activities. Some of the money raised will be donated to Dreamdrops, who buy equipment for children using the Holly Ward at Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

The family of Rotary is very important to us.

Paul Sadler decided to follow the example of his father Rotarian John Sadler and do something rather amazing.

He wanted to support the Little Princess Trust by donating his hair and raising sponsorship at the same time.

It has taken two years for Paul to grow his hair to a suitable length.

The Little Princess Trust provides real hair wigs to children with cancer to help them cope when they lose their hair.

The wigs are given, free of charge, to boys and girls.

Paul has now undergone the big chop reducing his by now infamous ‘big hair with bounce’ back to a number one all over. His hair had to be washed and straightened before the big chop. In addition to donating his mop Paul has raised £1,400 to give to the trust.
