An instant impact from the new man

-

Success can never be guaranteed, but life under new boss Steve Evans will certainly never be dull.

If the games become boring, watching Evans bouncing around his technical area will offer decent alternative entertainment, as long as he keeps on the right side of the law of course.

Evans didn’t have an awful lot to complain about (apart from a soft penalty award to Charlton) as his first match in charge yielded a 4-1 win over one of their major rivals for a League One play-off slot.

It was a flattering final scoreline - the new boss admitted as much afterwards - but frankly few in Posh colours will care.

Watching players running around a lot in their natural positions without pfaffing around making endless square and backwards passes was quite a pleasant experience, as was a positive use of substitutes.

Danny Lloyd and Jermaine Anderson both came on to create late goals for top scorer Jack Marriott as Posh eased to a most vital victory.

In a first-half when Charlton dominated possession, a three-goal victory looked unlikely, but an Andrew Hughes goal just before the break gave Posh the lead.

But the most crucial moment was Charlton striker Josh Magennis shooting wide from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute. Within five minutes Marcus Maddison had both won and converted a spot-kick to give Posh a twogoal cushion.

Michael Zyro’s header 15 minutes from time threatened a Charlton comeback, but Posh finished strongly thanks in part to Marriott’s predatory talents.

There is still much to improve upon despite the size and importance of the win. Talented Tariqe Fosu-Henry missed an absolute sitter at 2-0 for the visitors, while a two-man midfield is risky against teams who like to flood that area of the pitch.

It should be an exciting two-month ride though, on the pitch and in the techincal areas
