The man, aged in his 30s, is in a critical condition following the attack, which happened at about 8pm in Myrtle Avenue, Dogsthorpe on Tuesday.

Neighbours described being led out of their homes at gunpoint by armed police, and dozens of emergency vehicles, including ambulances and police cars turning up.

One man, who was initial- arrested by police but was released without charge yesterday, said he had been eating dinner with his partner in a flat near where the stabbing happened. He said : “I was eating dinner with my girlfriend, when we saw an ambulance outside. We watched for a while, and more police and ambulances arrived, and a man was taken out on a stretcher.”

His girlfriend said: “I went out to check what was happening, and there were armed police outside the door in the hallway. We were taken outside with guns pointed at us by police, and my boyfriend was arrested outside”

The man said he had suffered injuries to his arm in the arrest, and said he was kept at Thorpe Wood Police Station for 15 hours.

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “It is a nice neighbourhood, and most people get on with each other.

“It was scary when the armed police turned up. You do not expect that on your doorstep. There are children who live here - it is scary.”
