Dress style is police concern
I am glad that there are many reasons to praise Fiona Onasanya but her recent outburst is not one of them.
She complains about the inflammatory language of others by using stronger terms (‘Boris comments on burka are ‘vile’ says Peterborough MP’ - August 9).
Boris Johnson spoke of ‘letter-boxes’ as a flippant distraction. The important part of his message was about bank robbers. These veiled ladies have chosen to [wear clothing
potentially] thwarting the in- tegrity of CCTV and facial recognition systems.
Their style of dress is a headache for the police and helps terrorists to merge into the crowd.
We would not give permission for a small group of car drivers to ditch their number plates, so why then should we tolerate a fashion that does the same thing for social interaction and crime detection?
There are good reasons to campaign for the demise of face veils and Boris Johnson should be thanked for his contribution.
A smile is very important to me and I would rather not have faceless people in my world, thank you. No one likes to dictate a style of dress and we are
all wishing to be tolerant. We respect freedom of expression and hope to avoid changes in the law, so the way forward is to make our objections known by encouraging these women to give us a friendly face and leave the burka at home.
The antipathy they blame us for would evaporate overnight.
Those who complain about bigotry are so often the same people who are provoking it. Sadly, most veil wearers don’t seem to me to care about integration.
They should be encouraged to see the connection and give us all a smile for a change.
