Teenager’s charity music night Scouts off to World Jamboree next year

-

Three Peterborough Scouts have been selected to represent the UK as part of a team delivering the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia next summer.

Held only every four years, a World Scout Jamboree brings together 45,000 Scouts from across the world to experience international cultures and celebrate the Scouting principle: to create a better world.

UK Scouting has brought together a team from across the country to help deliver all aspects of the event from delivering world leading activities, to awe inspiring staged events through to mass catering.

Samantha Walker (20), of the 3rd Nene Sea Scouts, said: “I went to Japan for the last World Scout Jamboree and really enjoyed myself. I can’t wait to go to West Virginia and bask in the atmosphere of such a huge event. Most of this event I hope to be working on the performance stage to develop those skills”.

Vanessa Cann (25), of the 25th Peterborough Cub Scouts, said: “This will be my first World Scout Jamboree and I’m really looking forward to going abroad with the Scouts again, having already been to Malta with my group and going to Roverway in the Netherlands next year! I’ve heard WSJs are a unique environment that you’ll learn a lot from, and I can’t wait to be involved”.

And Sarah Bussey (19), of the 1st Yaxley Beaver Scouts, added: “I am very much looking forward to meeting new people from across the world and teaching them valuable skills for life”.

Chief Scout Bear Grylls said: “Congratulations to Samantha, Vanessa, Sarah and all the other UK volunteers who have been selected to support Scouts at the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia, USA.

“I wish them all the best and I know they are going to have an amazing time over the next few years.”

The 24th World Scout Jamboree will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico Scouting Associations, and will take place between July and August 2019. They aim to focus on the cultures of the ‘New World’. Final preparations are being made for a Woodston teenager’s fundraising night to help four charities. Sixteen-year-old Hannah Thompson, from Foster Road, Sugar Way, is putting on the event on August 31 from 7pm at The Fleet in Fletton - with Peterborough City Hospital’s Amazon Children’s Ward to be one of the beneficiaries. Entertainment will come from top local band Idolising Nova, Caustic Lights, The Box Disco and Tom Korni. Hannah suffers from an illness which sees her faint without warning, and her mum, Julie, said: “She’s just turned 16 years old and is a true inspiration to others. Her dad and I are so very proud. She really does deserve the support and praise for all she’s done so far for charity. This event was to mark the end of her year of fundraising for the four charities and her aim was to raise at least £1500 at this event.”
