Ex-postman helps to deliver a first round KO

-

Many say Posh robbed QPR when they sold striker Conor Washington for £2.5 million 30 months ago.

And to be fair the former St Ives postman has hardly set the Championship alight.

But Washington was handed a rare start at Loftus Road and created two goals inside the opening six minutes to effectively kick his old club out of the Carabao Cup at the first round stage.

Washington’s cross was fumbled into the danger area by Posh ‘keeper Aaron Chapman enabling Luke Freeman to open the scoring in the third minute and a superb pass gave Pawel Wszolek the opportunity to make it 2-0 three minutes later.

And that was pretty much that. QPR looked a class apart in the first 45 minutes before easing back after the break allowing Posh to offer more of a threat. Posh did play well and showed more desire throughout the second period, but their clearest chances arrivedlateandwerespurned by Siriki Dembele and substitute Jason Cummings. Dembele at least troubled home ‘keeper Joe Lumley.

Posh tried to play a 4-4-11 formation with midfielder Mark O’Hara detailed to support new striker Ivan Toney, but this was abandoned inside 10 minutes in favour of a 4-4-2. Posh boss Steve Evans will have learnt plenty on the night though, most notably how hard the Championship will be if they somehow get there.

The starting formation was ditched after 10 minutes.
