Posh still want Rose despite war of words

Posh retain an intetest in Mansfield Town striker Danny Rose even though their pursuit of the 24 year-old prompted a bitter war of words between the clubs.

Posh were accused of ‘manipulation, lies and deceit,’ by Mansfield manager David Flitcroft this week.

Flitcroft claimed Posh had told Rose to hand in a transfer request as they were confident they had met the Stags asking price.

But Posh director of football Barry Fry described the accusations as ‘the biggest load of rubbish I’ve ever heard’ and reminded Flitcroft that his own chairman John Radford had offered Rose to Posh in the first place!

Posh boss Steve Evans also repeated that point.

Posh are still keen to sign another forward player, but they don’t believe Mansfield would now allow him to move to the ABAX Stadium.

“It’s no secret I would like Danny and that he wants to play in League One,” Evans stated. “But to suggest we’ve been working on the player behind his club’s back is ridiculous. David Flitcroft, who should be concentrating on getting Mansfield promoted, seems to forget his chairman offered the player to us in the first place.”

And Fry weighed in by suggesting Flitcroft’s comments were designed to save face after his attempt to offload the player failed.

“What Flitcroft said is the biggest load of rubbish I’ve ever heard,” Fry said. “We showed no interest in this player until their chairman rang me up and told me he was surplus to the manager’s requirements.

“I suspect Flitcroft is now trying to cover his own backside as he’s sold the player twice before and he tried to sell him for a third time.”

Rose handed in a transfer request at Mansfield once Posh’s interest became known, but the player’s valuation has yet to be met.

Rose came on as a substitute and scored in Mansfield’s Carabao Cup win over Accrington on Tuesday.

After that game Flitcroft said: “Danny Rose has made a mistake, he knows that.

“He was lied to, manipulated and deceived by Peterborough who told him to hand a transfer request in as they had met the club’s valuation.

“Well they hadn’t. He was worked behind the scenes and it’s a shame.”

Rose could still leave Mansfield before the end of the month. Clubs can still loan players until August 31.

Striker Ivan Toney’s arrival was the only piece of permanent business Posh did on transfer deadline day (August 9). They did however loan out youngsters Sam Cartwright (St Ives), Josh Tibbitts (Solihull Moors) and Andrea Borg (Kettering Town).

On-loan midfielder Adam King has returned to parent club Swansea. King picked up an injury in a Posh pre-season friendly at Bedford.
