Parkway hang on to their Peterborou­gh League crown

Parkway A have retained the Peterborou­gh League Midweek Premier Division title and are heading for a 100 per cent record.

Blackstone­s have registered a third consecutiv­e league title by winning the second division and at the time of writing were still to be beaten, while Whittlesey Manor C have clinched Division Four.

In the Club 60 League, West Ward Lions have booked an immediate return to the Premier Division by winning Division One and Stamford are unbeaten at the top of Division Four.

A second title has come Blackstone­s’ way in the Weekend League Premier Division.

The last of the three League cup finals takes place at Longthorpe next Thursday afternoon when Market Deeping and Yaxley Hurricanes meet in the Mick Lewin Trophy decider.

■ Hunts bowlers struggled to make an impact in the second week of the Bowls England national championsh­ips at Leamington with Sawtry’s Toby Furzeland faring best by reaching the last 16 of the men’s junior singles.

He defeated Ryan Brennan (Cumbria) 21-12 and Graham Stack (Surrey) 21-19 before going down 17-21 to Glenn Adams (Middlesex). Whittlesey Manor’s Jack Corney lost 13-21 in the opening round to Craig Morphet (Wilts).

Jan Elliott and Karen Leader, also from Sawtry, came through two rounds of the pairs, beating Devon 25-16 and Northumber­land 21-20, before losing 9-29 to Wilts.

Both Hunts qualifiers in the two-bowl singles, Michelle Coleman (Parkway) and Juliet May (Buckden), lost their opening round matches to Carole Riley (Essex) and last year’s beaten finalist Sophie Tolchard (Devon) 13-15 and 8-15 respective­ly.

There were also opening round exits in the triples for rinks skipped by Pat Reynolds and Catherine Popple.

Popple, with Angie Morton and Sarah Newson, lost 11-15 to the Isle of Wight, while there were three generation­s in the Reynolds rink with daughter Emma Thurston and her 11-year-old daughter Keira, who was a substitute, at the front end, and they only lost on the last end, 12-14 to Warwickshi­re.

Parkway pair Sophie Morton and Merisha McKernan were beaten 4-20 by Devon in the first round of the under 25 pairs, while Trevor Collins and Tony Scarr, also from Parkway, lost 11-28 to Oxfordshir­e in the opening round of the men’s senior pairs.
