Posh are happy at the Valley after last-gasp win
Some results seem more significant than others.
This was one of those as Posh survived an intense battle at the Valley to emerge with their perfect winning record as well as their position at the top of the table intact.
Charlton were good, better than anyone else Posh have faced this season, but they could not break down a defence in which Rhys Bennett was quite brilliant, before conceding a last-minute penalty created by substitutes Marcus Maddison and Ivan Toney, and converted by super-cool Jason Cummings.
This was certainly a tough examination of a team’s heart as well as their promotion credentials and Posh came through it all with flying colours, much to the annoyance of Charlton boss Lee Bowyer who appears to have transferred his horrible playing traits to his new role.
He was out-managed here by Steve Evans whose bold decision to send nondefending Maddison on at a time when Posh were under pressure was rewarded with a typically terrific cross which led to a hotly-disputed penalty. Posh had enjoyed good spells of possession and created the better openings before the goal. Bennett headed against the underside of the bar from a first-half corner and after the break Siriki Dembele missed a one-onone opportunity.
Cummings also glanced a header wide after Joe Ward’s cross found him unmarked 12 yards from goal, but he kept his nerve impressively when it mattered at the death.
Charlton enjoyed lots of possession, but created very little. A good sign for Posh this season.
A bold decision to send Marcus Maddison on was rewarded.
