First-half blitz then all-out defence

-

Posh are going to get stronger as the season goes on, apparently.

That’s quite a sobering thought for the rest of League One as Steve Evans’ completely rebuilt side made it three wins and nine goals in three matches with this rather cosy success over Luton.

The Posh games have fallen into a familiar pattern so far. Blitz the first-half and then defend after the break. And my did they blitz a Luton side who appeared befuddled by their own tactics in the first-half. So much so they made a substitution after 30 minutes and another at the interval.

Posh scored twice in three minutes early in the game and added a third goal seven minutes before the interval when striker Jason Cummings delivered a classy finish after some fine approach work from Siriki Dembele.

Cummings had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after he’d fallen over Luton goalkeeper Marek Stech’s body before Dembele powered home an excellent second goal after picking himself up off the floor.

Luton realised it wouldn’t be their day when referee Graham Salisbury awarded them a penalty just before the break, but then changed his mind about Colin Daniel’s tackle on Elliot Lee and gave a corner instead.

Danny Hylton did pull a goal back 13 minutes from time, but by then Posh were in all-out defence mode and slowing the game down sufficiently to ensure a complete comeback was never likely.
