Milton’s Tiger is set for the Ryder Cup
Golf - British Boys Amateur Open Championship
A Peterborough golfer has been selected to play in the Ryder Cup.
Robin Tiger Williams, Peterborough Milton Golf Club’s special 16 year-old talent, has been picked to play for Europe in the Junior Ryder Cup.
Like the Ryder Cup, the Junior Ryder Cup is a biennial contest between Europe and America, but with each team consisting of six boys and six girls under the age of 18.
The tournament, first played in 1997, showcases the next generation of golfing stars and notable past participants include Sergio Garcia, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth.
This year’s event will take place on September 24 and 25 at Golf Disneyland in Paris.
Williams’ selection came hot on the heels of a fine performance in the British Boys Amateur Open Championship.
The former Hampton Har- gate School pupil played some fantastic golf before bowing out at the last 32 stage at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.
He was beaten 3&2 by Scotland’s Aidan O’Hagan in the second round of the matchplay stage of the event and that was a shock to many experts looking on.
For Williams looked like a champion in the early stages of the tournament and was a favourite of many to go all the way.
The England boys international, a losing semi-finalist 12 months ago, actually led the qualifiers into the matchplay stage after firing rounds of 71 and 70.
He topped the leaderboard with a three-under-par 141 out of a field of 252 of the world’s top young players and everything looked rosy.
And he still looked good when disposing of Archie Davies of Wales 5&4 in the first round of matchplay.
But Williams had a few wobbles in the next game and O’Hagan cashed in.
England’s Conor Gough defeated Spain’s Jose Luis Ballester 3&1 in the 36-hole final on Sunday.
Earlier this year Williams made it through to the last 16 of the US Amateur Championship.
NENE PARK
The best was saved until last in the Nene Park Ladies Threeball Alliance Open at Orton Meadows.
There were 78 entries representing 22 different clubs in the area and it was the very last team to finish - that of Vanessa Morris and Jayne Davis of Nene Park with Jackie Butler of Elton Furze - who returned a winning score of 93 points.
The event raised £320 for Nene Park lady captain Doreen Asher’s charity, Macmillan Cancer Care.
ELTON FURZE
George Walters is the new senior champion at Elton Furze.
Rounds of 69 and 76 (net) gave him a three-shot win in the 36-hole championship over Fred Mullenger (76+72).
