New hotel plans? Let’s sleep on it!

-

Plans for a new hotel in the city centre off Bridge Street on the site of the old police station have been recommended for approval. But once again, Peterborough’s Civic Society has suggested an amendment to the plans. The civic society has a habit of making suggestions on key developments - and, let’s face it, they tend to show clear thought and make sound good sense.

The society suggested a bridge over the Nene at Fletton Quays. After a campaign, backed by the PT, the city council listened and have promised a bridge in the next phase of development of that part of the city.

It was another sensible idea from the society that would have enhanced the area.

In respect of the latest plans for a Premier Inn on the site of the old police station and cells, the suggestion again makes perfect sense.

Pushing the road together and creating a more open space in front of the hotel would greatly enhance the area. It may be that the initial cost and disruption associated with the plans is greater - but the end result would be much better for the city, its residents and ultimately the hotel.

The Premier Inn’s selling point is ‘a good night’s sleep guaranteed’ and its guests’ might have a more relaxing experience with the layout suggested by the Peterborough Civic Society. Perhaps our planners and councillors should sleep on it! >Mark Edwards >@PT Mark Edwards
