More grand days out were had

As Rotarians, we are proud to use our organisational and practical skills to help others, but also we use them to entertain each other. Apologies to anyone missing the hot weather of June and July - Ortons Rotary brought it to an end by organising a BBQ for the residents of Stephenson Court!

The decision to eat indoors was made thinking excessive heat and lack of cover might be a problem for older guests.

On the day that choice was made due to a strong, cool breeze and chance of rain, several Rotarians cooked al fresco on the BBQ outside whilst others prepared salads that appeared as if by magic as the feast was served through the hatch. Everyone clearly enjoyed the occasion.

It was satisfying to feel Rotary had done a little to make the weekend a bit different for residents. It was a pity they could not eat in the garden this year but c’est la vie.

In July, Ortons members and families met at Thorpe Station for their own annual al fresco feast.

No trains were sighted, not surprising since Dr Beeching closed the line in 1964. The station is now the home of Rotarian Keith and his wife Menna. Keith expertly cooked and carved a leg of lamb, pork and ham.

A wide range of delicious salads and puds were provided by other members of the club.

This time the weather was balmy and a good time was had by all.

Also in July, a group of 17 Rotarians, partners, children, grandchildren and friends met up to walk together in and around King’s Cliffe. Their intrepid leader, Rotarian Roger, had planned an interesting route of roughly 4.5miles.

Lunch was pre-ordered at The Cross Keys. The group then headed north, soon reaching the village boundary where they joined a path roughly following the disused rail track due west.

This railway line was closed to passengers in 1966 and finally fell into disuse when the goods train ceased operating in 1968. With the sun beating down, it was a pleasure when Roger guided them to some shade, walking amongst trees and crossing an old bridge over the disused line.

A wide gravel track headed east back towards King’s Cliffe and a well deserved lunch together.

Another grand day out.
