Barnack completed the first leg of a likely Rutland League double this week.

The Division One leaders won the league’s John Wilcox Trophy competition beating Wisbech by eight wickets in Monday’s final at their own ground.

Wisbech did well to put a competitive side out considering they also had a Cambs League fixture at Histon on the same day, but they were no match for a Barnack XI bulging with talent.

Veteran all-rounder Ajaz Akhtar - he of Peterborough Town and Cambridgeshire fame in years gone by - ripped the heart out of the Wisbech innings with 4-21 off 10 overs.

Arshad Majeed (4-16) also bowled well and Wisbech had all gone for 71.

Asim Butt - he of current Peterborough Town fame then blasted 38 not out off 36 balls as Barnack reached 74-2 in 13 overs.

The village side are also on course to land their first Division One title in 24 years. They lead by 13 points from Bourne with two games left.

Peterborough Town bounced back to winning ways in the Northants League Premier Division on Saturday, beating Brigstock by seven wickets at Bretton Gate.

David Sayer took 4-40 as the visitors were bowled out for 161 and then opener Chris Milner (66no) steered Town home with plenty of overs and wickets to spare.

Town are third in the table and entertain fourth-placed Northampton Saints this Saturday (11.30am).

It was a good weekend for Castor in Division Two of the Cambs League. They picked up two fine wins to shoot up the table into fifth spot.

Kieran Rodgers (61no) was the unlikely matchwinner in their Saturday win over Huntingdon with his first halfcentury for six years and then Stuart Dockerill (4-11) shone with the ball in a Bank Holiday Monday success against Cambridge St Giles.

Also in Division Two, Stamford Town took a massive step towards guaranteeing their safety with a 91-run derby victory over Ufford Park. Simon Lem (80) and skipper Tom Williams (68) led the way.

In Division One the star individual performance of the weekend came from March Town’s Sri Lankan all-rounder Saranga Rajaguru, who struck 138 and took 5-37 in a big win over Ramsey.

Bourne and Market Deeping are both sweating in the Lincs Premier Division. They’ve had poor seasons and are dangerously close to the drop zone with two more matches remaining.

Deeping eased their worries a little by beating fellow strugglers Alford by five wickets on Saturday but were down in the doldrums again on Monday after crashing by 187 runs to Grantham.

Bourne were beaten on both days - by two wickets against Lincoln and by eight wickets against Boston after folding for just 84. Bourne are at Alford on Saturday and desperately need a win there. Premier Division (11.30am): Brigstock v Wollaston, Peterborough Town v Northampton Saints.
