Godden and Cummings are Posh’s perfect pair

Manchester United had Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke . . . Peterborough United have Jason Cummings and Matt Godden.

That was the comparison made by hot-shot Godden after he and strike partner Cummings ran rings round Plymouth on Saturday.

Both scored twice in the 5-1 win and both supplied an assist for each other. But what came off at Home Park was nothing carried forward from the training ground.

“Everbody says how Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke never worked on anything in training - me and Jason are the same,” said Godden.

“It’s not something you can work on. You either click or you don’t click and fortunately me and Jason click on the pitch.

“He played a brilliant ball for my first goal and all I had to do was tuck it in with my left foot. We seem to have a good relationship on the pitch.”

The two of them could be rivals for the Skybet League One player of the month award - Cummings heads the League One scoring chart with five goals and Godden has four - but Godden insists team points are more important than individual awards.

He added: “Jason’s been terrific. He’s taking his chances and it’s the same for me. But it’s not really about individual accolades. The main thing is the team keeps winning and stays top of the pile.”

And Godden is confident Posh will extend the club record run to six games on Saturday when Doncaster Rovers visit the ABAX Stadium. The fifth win at Plymouth was a best ever Football League start to a season.

“We were all so determined to be in the history books for that fifth win,” said Godden. “Every single one of us, the gaffer, the players and even the subs as well were saying at half-time ‘don’t go out there and fail’.

“We didn’t and it’s now all about the next challenge. It’s important we keep our feet on the ground and go for that sixth win on Saturday.

“We can’t take our foot off the gas because it’s not the way we play. We want to be the team everyone fears. We want to keep winning. That builds confidence.”

For Godden to make such a flying start to a season in front of goal is somewhat unusual.

He said: “It’s a weird one really because I don’t normally score in August. I don’t think I’ve scored in August for the past five or six seasons.

“My mum and dad keep asking me what’s happening - they can’t believe it.

“I really seem to have hit the ground running and long may it continue.”

Godden believes that the quick starts Posh have been making to matches are reaping rich rewards.

“We work on being quick out of the blocks. Everyone knows what they are doing. We start on the front foot and push them high and we’ve been getting the rewards.

“That’s been the catalyst for our good start to the season.”
