CAN POSH MAKE IT SUPER 6?

Peterborough United manager Steve Evans has his sights set on becoming the next club legend.

Speaking after Saturday’s record-breaking win at Plymouth, Evans stated he wants to follow in the footsteps of promotion-winning managers Chris Turner, Noel Cantwell and Darren Ferguson.

The 5-1 result - secured through goals by Jason Cummings (2), Matt Godden (2) and Siriki Dembele - enabled Posh to go two points clear at the top of League One after completing five wins in the first five matches of a Football League season for the first time in the club’s history.

Posh are now the only Football League club with a perfect record and Evans was naturally thrilled.

“I’m a very happy man,” Evans enthused. “To be top of the league, to have set a new club record and to play so well against a very good team makes me very proud.

“I am in awe of the people who have managed this club in the past. The likes of Chris Turner, Noel Cantwell and Darren Ferguson are heroes of mine for what they did at this club as managers and if I can achieve the success they did I will be a very proud man.

“Managing this club is a cause for me, not just a job and I am delighted with the results we have achieved so far and with the performances we have delivered.

“This is only three points of course, but we can enjoy the moment.

“We were excellent from start to finish. We scored two early goals when we were dominant and then we dug in and defended well as a team when they had their best spell just before the break.

“Keeping a clean sheet to half-time was vital and then when we scored early in the second half as well it became a question of how many we would score.

“I’d have taken a 1-0 win here, but the quality of our attacking play was worthy of a big win.

“Jason Cummings was excellent. He was a big signing for us. He’s not just a talented striker though - he has bought in to the work ethic we demand.

“We actually missed three excellent chances as well or it could have been a much bigger win. Plymouth created half chances, but all the clearest chances were ours.”

Almost 300 Posh supporters made the long trip to Home Park and the Posh players were quick to show their appreciation.

Straight after the game Ryan Tafazolli said on social media: “Unbelievable support from the travelling fans today again. Heard you behind us the whole game. Class.”

Godden added: “What a feeling to break a club record in the way we did. Buzzing to get my first brace of the season and what an effort from the fans behind the goal.”

Club chairman Darragh MacAnthony also took to Twitter after the game.

He said: “13 hour round trip for me and the posh fans but hell we’d do double that for a performance like this.”

He also sang the praises of Joe Ward and gave his opinion on who he thinks will win League One.

“Joe Ward was on fire and trust me his team-mates love him to bits for what he does. That was the most attacking I’ve seen him today. He only started playing league football eight months ago and will get miles better.”

“I expect Sunderland to walk this league. I said it in the summer and nothing has changed.

“A club the size of Sunderland with millions in parachute payments and players who have played loads of prem games, plus that support at home, should have the league wrapped up by the start of April. Simple facts. That’s just how football works especially at this level.”
