McCann masters Evans, but doesn’t beat him

-

It might have been a clever tactic from the Posh management team of Steve Evans and Paul Raynor to get themselves sent off within seconds of each other.

Until that rather unseemly incident 10 minutes from time, Doncaster were threatening to grab the winning goal their overall performance deserved.

But the fuss caused by red cards, issued for stepping outside a technical area or for foul and abusive language depending on who you believe, led to a raise in support level from a boisterous home crowd and to breaking up the visitors’ rhythm. It was the only time Evans got the better of his Posh predecessor Grant McCann all afternoon.

Rovers’ style shouldn’t have surprised anyone well versed in McCann’s management. They kept possession easily, but they could have done with a bit more oomph and penetration when camping out on the edge of the Posh penalty area.

But they were by far the better team other than in a five-minute spell after Ryan Tafazolli equalised with a header from Siriki Dembele’s free-kick on 58 minutes.

Posh were indebted to two excellent saves by ‘keeper Aaron Chapman to frustrate former London Road favourite Tommy Rowe and to the woodwork which kept out a shot from Mallik Wilks.

Getting a point when playing poorly is a decent habit though.
