Gill thrills Sky viewers as he lands Commonwealth crown
Boxing - Chatteris boxer wins Commonwealth featherweight title
Chatteris boxer Jordan Gill turned in a perfect performance in front of the live Sky TV cameras to become Commonwealth featherweight champion on Saturday night.
The 24 year-old challenger, nicknamed ‘The Thrill’, stunned title holder Ryan Doyle with a dazzling display of accurate punching to win the first six rounds before stopping him in the seventh at the Copper Box Arena in London.
The Fenland fighter was roared on by a noisy following as he wobbled the champion in the fourth round before sending him to the canvas late in the sixth with a sharp left hand.
Doyle, who was making the first defence of the title, was unable to withstand further pressure in the seventh and referee Victor Loughlin called a halt after one minute 32 sec- onds of the session to launch the celebrations as Gill extended his unbeaten record to 22 fights.
Gill told Sky Sports he was now interested in taking on the winner of the forthcoming bout for the British title between Cromer’s Ryan Walsh and Morecambe’s Isaac Lowe.
After receiving his belt, Gill said: “What a night! Commonwealth champion! It’s been a long road of sacrifice, but on Saturday night I achieved something nobody will ever be able to take away from me. Thanks to everyone for their support.”
Gill’s father Paul said: “When I told people 20 years ago he could become a champion, people laughed at me.”
Gill’s trainer Dave Coldwell added: “Jordan’s had his opportunity. That’s what he’s been craving. He does everything you ask him to do. I’m very proud of him.
“It was a punch-perfect performance. I loved watching him go to work tonight.
“This talented young man is just 24 years old so there’s so much more to come!
“Fourteen months ago he was ready to walk away from the sport he loves because he was disillusioned with how, despite living right and staying in the gym, his career was stalling.
“We’re all so glad he decided to stick at it.”
