LONG WEEKEND: SPECIAL EDITION Second Sight, cert 15 Blu-ray 2-disc set £19.99
When a couple who treat animals and nature with total disdain head out into the Australian outback and run into big trouble with wildlife, you won’t be cheering for the humans. There was a 2008 Hollywood remake with Jim Caviezel, but this is the brilliant 1978 Australian original. It’s a suspenseful horror/thriller with an eco twist reminiscent of Hitchcock’s The Birds. It begins with bickering couple Peter (John Hargreaves) and moody Marcia (Briony Behets) deciding on a makeor-break camping weekend at a wilderness beach, and we soon see how callously they treat animals and nature. They debate leaving their pet dog home alone, carelessly set fire to brush on the way, mow down a kangaroo, leave a litter trail and Peter shockingly kills a dolphin-like creature, leaving its defenceless pup to die. They have completely ignored news bulletins about terrifying bird attacks in Sydney and suggestions that nature’s taking revenge on careless humankind. Peter’s obsessed with his harpoon gun and new rifle..all the better to hunt with. The tables are turned as they are attacked by an eagle and other creatures, food’s spoiling in their portable freezer, and Marcia wants to run as rustling trees and whispering grass become sinister sounds that push them to the edge. Name another wilderness thriller. Entries to Alex Gordon, Weekend competition, by Nov 15.
