A lovely location, but it was grim for Posh as usual

-

Wycombe FC is a delightful venue, one located at the bottom of a tree-lined valley.

But for Posh a trip to this part of Buckinghamshire is usually a grim experience. They once conceded two goals at Adams Park without touching the ball in between strikes either side of the halftime interval and one win in 11 Football League attempts is a sad statistic against a club who would never claim to be a League One powerhouse.

Wycombe had won their three previous home games, but they were missing talisman striker Adebaya Akinfenwa for this one. Without him they had little quality or aggression up top for a game against a team with an outstanding away record, one that had propelled them to second in the table.

The hosts buzzed about, enjoyed the greater share of possession and won numerous set-pieces in dangerous places, all of which were wasted by poor deliveries.

It was surely a case of waiting for Posh to claim their customary goal and stroll to away success number eight? But no. Centre-back Rhys Bennett and striker Matt Godden both enabled Wycombe ‘keeper Ryan Allsop to make saves from close range efforts and 10 minutes after Godden’s miss disaster struck midway through the second-half.

Centre-back

Ryan Tafazolli, who had breezed through of the game, was caught in possession, but thought he’d rescued the situation by scything down Fred Onyedimna on the edge of the area.

Instead a weak shot at goal by Bryn Morris travelled into the net thanks to a hefty deflection. And that was that.

Posh are far less threaten- ing when falling behind and never sustained any pressure on a back four that might well have crumbled. Wingers Joe Ward and Siriki Dembele were so poor, substitute Marcus Maddison delivered more than both combined in his 20 minute cameo.

Maddison saw one longrange shot well saved and delivered a delicious cross in the final minute which sadly found no takers.

It was that sort of afternoon for Posh, not for the first time at Adams Park.
