Star striker responds in style to public criticism

-

Steve Evans should start dishing out public criticism of his players every week.

Matt Godden was in the firing line after a poor team display at Wycombe in the previous Posh outing and he responded with two quality finishes to ease his side’s path into the second round of the FA Cup.

Evans suggested hanging a key player out to dry in the press was a motivational tactic. It’s probably one that wouldn’t have worked with Marcus Maddison.

The excellent Joe Ward also netted to seal a victory which was rather more comfortable than many expected. Certainly those who witnessed the lame attempts to beat Woking and Tranmere at the first attempt last season would have been grateful for the lack of nailbiting.

Only for five minutes were Posh threatened. That was the gap between home defender Roger Johnson punishing a bad moment for goalkeeper Aaron Chapman and Godden volleying home a fine equaliser on the stroke of half-time. In be- tween Bromley midfielder Frankie Raymond was sent off for thrusting an elbow into George Cooper’s face. The second half was a breeze. Posh dominated possession and played well apart from a few poor decisions on the edge of the home penalty area. Godden swept home his second and Ward started and finished a fine move for the final goal.
