I’m grateful to Jeff Clipson, of North Street, Stanground for his knowledge about the picture right which featured in last week’s Looking Back.
Jeff, 71, has lived all his life in Stanground and confirmed-it is a picture of the staunch in his neigbourhood.
He told me me a lockkeep-er still lives in the cottage. In the summer months there are still many longboats who use the staunch on their way towards Whittlesey. Jeff said the chimney in the background was one of London Brick’s. Nowadays the Green Wheel runs nearby.
Food prices are always a source of fascination. And back in December 1976, Gibsons, of St Paul’s Road had a special bargain offer of a 56lb sack of King Edwards for the princely sum of £4.50.
Meanwhile, the Co-op butchery departments were offering oven ready turkey from 42p per lb. And you could get a 1lb pork pie for 46p.
Johnsons Speedifreeze Frozen Foods in Lincoln Road was offering “1 litre vanilla sliceable ice cream’’ for 26p.
