The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - FAMILY - with Alex Gordon

BLOOD Acorn, cert 15 DVD 2-disc set £24.99

An Irish family bonded by blood, but torn apart by suspicion, is at the heart of this mystery drama which ran nightly on Channel 5 recently, It’s dark and gritty, not glossy like writer Sophie Petzal’s last hit, Riviera on Sky1. It opens with Cat (Carolina Main) travelling home to a small town near Dublin after the sudden death of her mother in an accident. When Cat pulls over to be sick she’s lucky not to be breathalysed by a local copper. But then, everyone around here knows and respects her dad, GP Jim Hogan (Adrian Dunbar - pictured). Everyone likes big Jim, only Cat knows he has another side, which drove her away. Now she’s back and the tension between her, her dad and siblings Michael and Fiona, fizzes with emotion. Cat’s suspicious about her sickly mother’s mysterious fall. It’s a puzzle with missing pieces. When she discovers Jim was having an affair with his secretary the situation becomes explosive. Did her mum really turn a blind eye? It seems her brother and sister knew. A threatening message from Jim on her mother’s old phone adds to her suspicion that he killed her. Or are grief and hurt playing tricks with Cat’s mind?
