Whittlesey Athletic put holders in a spot of bother

-

Netherton United ran into a spot of bother again as they surrendered their grip on another trophy last weekend.

The city side were knocked out of the Peterborough Senior Cup by Premier Division rivals Whittlesey Athletic on penalties at the Grange, just a few weeks after losing a Northants Junior Cup tie in the same fashion.

Whittlesey were worthy winners though after playing a full part in a thrilling quarter-final which finished 4-4 after 90 minutes. They led 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2 before Netherton fought back to force a shootout with two goals in the final eight minutes.

Jack Carter (2), Matt Heron and Jamie Darlow scored the Whittlesey goals with Josh Smith (2), Tommy Randall and Ritchie Baines replying for Netherton. Whittlesey won the shoot-out 4-3 to earn a semi-final at Ketton, provisionally on February 16. Moulton Harrox, who smashed Thorney 7-0, and Stamford Lions, who beat Polonia 5-0, clash in the other semi-final.

Netherton now have just two trophies to defend, the Peterborough Premier Division title and that competition’s Presidents’ Shield. Netherton are seven points adrift of league leaders Harrox with a game in hand ahead of a trip to Sutton Bridge on Saturday. Harrox are without a fixture.

Whittlesey are back in cup action this Saturday. They host Foxton in a Cambs Cup quarter-final tie at Feldale Field (1.45pm).

Division One sides Parson Drove, Uppingham Town, Bretton North End, Spalding Town and Wittering Harriers have applied for promotion to the Premier Division.
