The dramatic front page of the Evening Telegraph on Monday, March 7, 1977, told of a lucky escape for city man Bob Clarke.

Sales engineer Mr Clarke, from Netherton, was on business trip to Bucharest Romania for Newalls in Woodston.

There he suffered ‘the most frightenin­g’ experience of his life. He was about to leave his hotel room for an evening meal when a huge earthquake struck. He told the ET: “I thought it was the end for me.’’
