CCTV call as toilet is tipped on city path
There have been calls for CCTV to be installed on a Peterborough path after a second huge fly-tip was dumped in just six weeks.
The latest fly-tip on the path at Tenter Hill, Stanground happened over the weekend - with doors, plasterboard and even a toilet left in the middle of the route - which is close to a park and a scout hut.
In January another houseclearance style fly-tip was also left on the same path.
Also this weekend, a large, distinctive red and black sofa was among waste dumped at Middle Road, Newborough.
UKIP Cllr John Whitby, who represents Fletton and Stangound, said: “My suggestion would be that we install simple CCTV cameras in the worst affected areas, and some others that we assess as being ‘at risk’. “But, the key then is that the courts take this issue as seriously as the residents who’s lives this behaviour blights, and ensure that those who flytip are both caught and suit- ably punished.
“I would like Peterborough and the surrounding area to be viewed as ‘Off -limits’ by the fly tipping fraternity as they simply can’t afford to do it here.”
Cllr Christian Hogg, Liberal Democrat councillor for Fletton and Stanground, sadded: “Like most problems, there is no simple solution to this. What is required is to make people better informed on the consequences of using unlicensed waste carriers, making it easier for residents to dispose of their waste in a legal way, either by using the council’s bulky waste collection service, or by getting a permit to use the Household Recycling Centre in Fengate with a van or trailer.”
