Darren Ferguson remains determined to steer Peterborough United to the Championship for the third time in his career.

Ferguson and his assistant Gavin Strachan signed contracts yesterday (Wednesday) tying them to the ABAX Stadium until 2022.

Ferguson took Posh up to the second tier in 2009 and 2011 (before he was twice dismissed by current chairman Darragh MacAnthony)and the 47 year-old hasn’t ruled out another promotion this term even though the team have won just two and lost six League One matches since he came back at the end of January.

“Maybe ending the uncertainty over my future will help this season,” Ferguson said. “We will certainly be giving it a right go for the final eight matches.

“But it’s a long-term project we have signed up for. Myself and Gavin are delighted and excited to extend our stay because we believe the co-owners want the same thing as us and that’s to reach the Championship and stay there.

“The club is in a better position to do that now. Things are different with co-owners, a much-improved training facility and a bigger budget for the Academy.”

The Posh co-owners issued a statement to announce Ferguson’s extended contract.

It read: “It was vitally important we appointed a manager we can trust and who understands our core philosophies as a club.

“The style of play and taking on young and hungry talent and developing them is what Peterborough United is renowned for and in the last 18 months we have veered away from that.

“We wanted to appoint a manager who can deliver on a brand of football that pleases us and the supporters and Darren epitomises everything that we would want. Our decision was unanimous.”
