BAPTISTE Acorn, cert 15 DVD 2-disc set £24.99 The elderly, limping. French detective from BBC1 hit The Missing plunges into dirty doings on the sleazy side of Amsterdam in his first spin-off series. Baptiste (Tcheky Karyo - pictured), to the delight of brother writers Harry and Jack Williams, proved popular in both series of The Missing, but his case solving is more Columbo than Dirty Harry. He asks questions, lets the answers percolate and goes home to his wife to discuss his next move. Baptiste has moved his whole family, including daughter, son-in-law and grandchild from France and he’s asked by the female Amsterdam police chief (a former lover) to help desperate Englishman, Edward Stratton (Tom Hollander) find his missing niece. She has a drug habit and may have been abducted in the red light district. Pow! Right there a long and corrupt trail lies ahead as Baptiste’s plunged into a world where everything’s for sale, and a vicious gang of Romanian people traffickers will kill anyone who gets in their way. The closer Baptiste gets to finding the girl the more danger he puts his own terrified family in. As the bodies pile up, it’s obvious people, including Stratton, are lying and the elderly cop is just another pawn in a dangerous game of sex, drugs and murder. It’s a twisty triumph.

In which hit series did Hollander star with Tom Hiddleston? Entries to Alex Gordon, Baptiste competition by April 18.
