Why Darragh loves working with Fergie

Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony has spoken of his delight at working with firstteam manager Darren Ferguson again.

MacAnthony hired Ferguson for the third time in rather controversial circumstances in January.

The chairman sacked previous boss Steve Evans after a creditable 0-0 home draw with promotion rivals Charlton left the club in sixth place in League One.

Posh are now seventh and only second-favourites to claim the final play-off place, but MacAnthony is relaxed about his decision. He also made comments in an interview with the club this week that some will read as criticism of Evans.

“It’s been great for me to have Fergie back at the club,” MacAnthony said.

“I just want to work with someone who I connect with, someone who I look forward to talking to every day, someone who doesn’t make demands every day, someone who puts smiles on the faces of the rest of the staff, someone who appreciates the work of the Academy and someone who appreciates it when you can support him and understands when you can’t support him.

“That’s my relationship with Fergie and let’s be honest he’s the only manager I’ve had whose delivered any success.

“It wasn’t just my decision to re-hire him either. Darren struggled to get positive results when he first arrived, but even then my co-owners were pushing to get him tied down permanently.

“Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson both get on really well with him and that’s important for me.

“I’m lucky to have two great partners. I’ve never done partners before and I’m surprised at how easy it’s been.

“We all have our strengths. Jason Neale has worked incredibly hard on purchasing the stadium and Stewart Thompson has worked incredibly hard on raising the funds to buy it. They’ve been a breath of fresh air for me.

“There is and will be a lot going on behind the scenes with the stadium being purchased and other stuff, but nothing will be allowed to distract from the main aim which will always be to win promotion. Forget the three, five or 10-year plans we might have, our number one plan is always to get into the Championship.

“We still have a chance this season, although we might need to win all five matches.”

MacAnthony also revealed Posh have offered former playing hero Aaron Mclean a three-year coaching contract.

Mclean has been working with the current Posh forwards at the ABAX for a month .

“Aaron is a great man to have around the club,” MacAnthony added. “He knows the club well and he is passionate about it. Darren is happy to work with players he used to manage. He’s worked with Gavin Strachan and Grant McCann in the past.”
