DUBLIN MURDERS Acorn, cert 15

DVD 2-disc set £24.99 Watching this murky Irish cop thriller is like swimming in a pool filled with Guinness and getting more befuddled with every stroke.

Events past and present get as entangled as a kitten trying to escape from a knitting bag, but it’s easier to follow on DVD by binge watching all eight episodes of the BBC1 series. I’ll try to avoid spoilers! In 2006 a young girl’s body is found posed on an altar at an archaeolog­ical site threatened by plans for a motorway to bypass poverty-stricken Knocknaree. Murder squad team Rob Reilly (Killian Scott) a Brit, and partner Cassie (Sarah Greene) seem to have reasons to wish they hadn’t got this case, and the murder stirs up dangerous emotions in the community as it brings back memories of three children going into the woods to play 21 years ago, and only one boy coming back alive. UPGRADE: LIMITED EDITION Second Sight, cert 15 Blu-ray 2-disc set £24.99 This cult sci-fi thriller from the creator of Saw gets a nice package and oodles of extras. In the near-future Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is a technophob­e who prefers old muscle cars, but it’s a gizmo that’ll change his life when his wife’s killed and he’s left paralysed in a mugging by cyborgs. Shady tech wizard Eron (Harrison Gilbertson) offers to help with an AI chip called Stem. Installed in Grey’s neck it turns him into an unstoppabl­e vigilante, like a twisted Robocop, with Stem calling the shots.

Our rating:

an emotional wreck and has a fear of the woods. Cassie also has a past trauma she can’t shake and is so keen to exorcise her own demons she puts herself at risk. Meanwhile Rob’s hiding an explosive secret that could wreck his career in the adaptation of two Tana French bestseller­s. Name another Irish-set TV thriller. STUBER 20th Century Fox, cert 15 DVD £9.99 This is a buddy action comedy that will appeal mostly to fans of burly Dave Bautista, and would-be Uber cab drivers. Stu (Kumail Nanjiani) is a downtrodde­n cab driver whose life is about to be turned upside down when he picks up the passenger from hell, LAPD detective Vic Manning (Bautista), who just happens to be hot on the trail of a drug kingpin.

In no time Stu is trying desperatel­y to hold onto his wits, his life and his five-star rating as the grouchy cop forces him into one tricky situation after another. It’s a rollicking ride!
