Flats evacuated by police after ‘bomb scare’
Suspicious device prompts large emergency response
Flats in Peterborough were evacuated over fears of a suspicious device, police have revealed.
Officers executing a warrant relating to an alleged domestic offence on Friday at 5.52pm discovered the device in a property in Blackmead, Orton Malborne.
Several police vehicles and the bomb disposal unit were called out straight away, with residents moved out of their properties and a 100m cordon put in place “as a precaution”.
Cambridgeshire police declined to comment on Friday and over the weekend about the incident when contacted by the Peterborough Telegraph.
However, a spokesperson said on Monday: “Officers executing a warrant relating to an alleged domestic offence on Friday at 5.52pm discovered a suspicious device in a property in Blackmead, Orton Malborne, Peterborough.
“A 100 metre cordon was put in place as a precaution and the device was later found to be non-suspicious.
“A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of breaching a non-molestation order and was later released on bail.”
Asked what the device was, the spokesman said it was a “home-made item”.
Several residents living in the area contacted the PT for more information after becoming concerned by the presence of the bomb disposal unit.
They said police were there for several hours with onlookers moved away from the cordon, and that no information was provided by officers at the scene as to the nature of the incident.
