Round Two of the Decoy Winter Series was fished on the Beastie and Horseshoe Pools and it was those on the Beastie that dominated the prize list.

Leading the way with a very impressive 161lb 15oz was Ian Kent on Beastie Peg 5. The match didn’t start off too well as in the first hour he only caught a few small fish. A switch to a long pole line after little success on the feeder meant he never looked back.

He fed micro pellets and fished corn on the hook and at times a soft pellet to finish well clear of the chasing pack. Barry Mason came second from peg 13 on Beastie weighing in 128lb 15oz, followed by Billie Smalley with 60lb 15oz.

Over the past few • months venues across the country have been badly hit by the wet weather. However the Fenland waters have thrived with the Old Nene at March the jewel in the crown.

The water dropped a foot overnight and in most areas we saw some fantastic sport.

Top rod with a level 25lb was Lee Wright, the Starlets man drew opposite the town clock and fished pinkie over groundbait at the start of the match before switching to hemp seed and caught a better stamp of roach. A close second with 24lb 8oz was Mark Campion from the Wigston Bridge section. He fished pinkie and groundbait all day. Graham Welton came third with 22lb 5oz, followed by Steve Winters on 22lb 4oz.

Tydd Gote AC travelled • to the Twenty Foot Drain at Chain Bridge on Sunday for their Christmas match where they were met with a drain bank high and steadily pushing through.

Dennis Houghton drew the peg he wanted, hot peg 3 and on the day the “Golden Peg” as well. He fished well and comfortably took the honours with a commanding performance with maggot and pinkie on a top two and top three for 9lb 2oz. Runner-up was Ian Benton on peg 7 who also fished close in for some slightly better quality roach and perch on maggot for a level 4lb, just edging Andrew Kilby’s 3lb 15oz of small fish from peg 2.

The Wednesday Open at Main Road was won by Pete Emery, 18lb 8oz, with John Taylor, 13lb 6oz, Don Green, 7lb 10oz.

The last big open match • of the year at Float Fish Farm Fishery saw the match spread over the Horseshoe and Phoenix Pools. Water levels were high, but the pools are holding good colour so there were always a few fish willing to feed.

Top rod from peg 18 on Horseshoe was Geordie Best, who fished a small feeder to the island for most of the day to finish with 59lb 9oz.

A close second from peg 1 was Cameron Stokes with 56lb. Over on the Phoenix Pool the hot pegs in the 20s produced the best catches, Peter Carter on peg 21 took the honours, alternating between the feeder and pole to finish on 66lb 5oz. On peg 23 was Colin Clark, hefishedsimilartactics to the winner but came up just short with 65lb 12oz.
