Proud performances at festive shows

-

Peterborough Police ABC were in action in two amateur boxing shows on Sunday.

At the Acocks Green debut boxing show in Birmingham, Emily Anderson took on the host club’s Millie Short at 41kg.

Emily started very stronly, forcing Millie, who was an awkward southpaw, on to the ropes with quality straight punches to the head and body.

Emily found her range easily and dominated the first two rounds. Millie came back strongly, but it wasn’t enough. Emily came away with a fantastic unanimous points win over a very tough opponent.

This was a great win and confidence booster for Emily, with great things to come from her this season.

At the Sudbury ABC annual Christmas show Shae Gowler from Fletton took on Scott Stannard from the home club at 39kg.

In another quality actionpacked show, this was a real test for Shae, as Scott was number two in the country and tri-nations finalist in the age group above Shae, 2005 category. He proudly wore well-earned England vest. Shae is only in the 2006 category.

This didn’t phase Shae, who dominated every round and found his range with ease.

Shae boxed a very intelligent and skilful performance, beating Scott to the punch and winning the exchanges.

So it was very disappointing when the split points decision went to Scott, when many of the crowd thought Shae clearly won every round.

Dom Ciani from Facet lost on points in a really tough battle against a lad from Cavey ABC at 70kg.

Substitutes will be allowed for the first time in the Peterborough Bowls League next season.

Club delegates attending the annual general meeting voted in favour of a one-year experiment in the Tuesday afternoon Club 55 League, previously known as the Club 60 League

It is hoped that such a move will reduce the chances of clubs with more than one team in the competition having to play short.

The name of the league was changed at the annual meeting following a decision last year to allow players to become eligible at the age of 55.

The new League president is Adrian Owen (East Community), who received the chain of office from outgoing president Gordon Stirman (City of Peterborough).

Martin Garfield (Conservative) is president elect.

All the principal officers were re-elected, while Terry Stratton (Bretton) joins the management committee, along with former president, chairman and life member Peter Cooke.

Election of officers: President Adrian Owen; Chairman - Melvyn Beck; Secretary & treasurer - Andy Cox; Fixture secretary - Tony Coe.

Management committee: Bruce Saint (vice-chairman), Martin & Brenda Tibbles, Peter Cook, Terry Stratton and Gordon Stirman (immediate past president).
