Vulnerable, elderly and hard-pressed NHS staff supported by community groups and businesses
Volunteers helping to feed the elderly, vulnerable and those in the frontline battle against coronavirus ahve been praised by Peterborough MP Paul Bristow.
MrBristow showed his gratitude to the Open Door Baptist Church in Harris Street, Millfield, and WestRaven Community Café in Hampton Court, West- wood, which both have com- munity fridges.
The MP visited both places on Monday having helped to secure food donations.
He said: “The Millfield community fridge and the WestRaven Community Café are yet more examples of Peterborough’s community spirit.
“This is a tough time for many people and organisations like these are making a real difference. They are relying on donations, supermarkets and grant funding in order to make up food parcels for those who need help.
“It was great to help secure these donations, but they do need more.
“If you can help, please go give generously the next time you shop. If you need help, please don’t struggle alone. Peterborough’s proving again what a special city it is.
“They both make me proud of Peterborough.”
Elsewhere in Peterborough a generous donation of home-cooked meals was delivered to the Intensive Care Unit at Peterborough City Hospital for staff taking part in Ramadan.
Labour councillors at Peterborough City Council - Cllr Amjad Iqbal (Central ward) and Cllr Lucinda Robinson (Ravensthorpe) - have been preparing and cooking dozens of meals to thank the NHS for their ‘selfless service’.
Fellow Labour councillor
Dr Shabina Qayyum, who was at the hospital to receive the food on behalf of staff, found the donation “heart-warming”.
She said: “At a time when mosques would usually be open in the city, as a result of the Covid-19 situation the charity we extend in Ramadan should be shown to the workers on the frontline.”
Meanwhile, City College
Peterborough has made an urgent appeal for restaurants and food suppliers in Peterborough to donate takeaway food cartons to help feed local residents during the coronavirus crisis. So far, the college has delivered more than 5,000 meals to the homeless and Cross Keys Homes residents.
It said if cartons can be donated its driver can come and collect them.
