Thousands of jobs created at Gateway
A major distribution park on the edge of Peterborough has spawned almost 4,000 jobs in the six years since its official opening.
The 240 acre Peterborough Gateway, at Alwalton Hill, was opened to great fanfare in 2014 and quickly established itself as the ideal location for a number of world beating companies.
Early arrivals at the park, which is now developed by Newlands, were technology company E-Leather, pioneers in the manufacture of composition leather, and Smart Garden Products creating 25 jobs.
Recent arrivals have included fresh food supplier AM Fresh, creating up to 180 jobs, medical devices provider Coloplast, which recruited 150 staff, and global brand supplier URBN. Supermarket giant Lidl is building a distribution centre that could create 500 jobs.
New figures show companies on the park together employ at least 3,500 people with the value of the entire business hub put at £350 million.
Tom Hennessy, chief executive of economic development company Opportunity Peterborough, said: “Peterborough Gateway is an extremely important asset for Peterborough, especially with the huge demand the city faces for commercial stock. The site has generated more than £350 million worth of investment, including from South Africa, the USA, Denmark and Germany and created over 3,500 jobs.
“It’s brought new names to the city, like drinks manufacturer, Kingsley Beverages, and lifestyle retailer URBN and has given businesses already based in Peterborough - Coloplast and E-Leather - room to expand.”
