When Posh played cricket every year!

-

Posh fan and collector of memorabilia Steve Harding has been in touch to share some more fascinating items that he has picked up recently.

Steve said: “The last match Peterborough United played [before lockdown] was versus Portsmouth. But 96 years ago Peterborough & Fletton played at Fratton Park in a Southern League fixture.’’

The cover of the programme and the team line ups are pictured.

Steve added: “An eightpage issue was printed priced two old pence. It’s interesting to note the Peterborough forward Cook was the son of old Portsmouth goalkeeper Fred Cook.”

Steve also sent in a picture of some old tickets.

He said: “The picture shows a selection of old tickets. First is the match v Aston Villa at Villa Park in 1961 which was probably the largest attendance that Peterborough have ever played in front of - with many people locked out.

“The second ticket is a giant-killing match with the Posh going to Walsall and winning 3-1.

“The third ticket is from the FA Cup replay at Norwich in 1961 v Colchester where a car accident robbed Peterborough of probably their greatest player Dennis Emery who was badly injured.

‘‘He never fully recovered although he did play again, for Peterborough and Bedford, he was never the same.

“There is also a picture of a very unusual club blazer badge probably from the late 1950s of the club crest.

“Finally, during the summer months Peterborough seemed to play at least one cricket match against a local team or as in this case a celebrity team. The 1961 celebrity team had some great names involved including ex-Posh boss G. Swindon, Jack Froggatt (Wisbech manager) and Jesse Pye (Wisbech forward).

“As far as I can tell Peterborough United played cricket matches every season from 1952 to 1963. The last year saw them play Leicester City.

Steve added: “If anybody has any of these or any other old Peterborough items I can be contacted on 07944 588908.’’

Many thanks to Steve for sharing information about these items from his collection.
