If only, if only, if only...
Every team can point to hard luck and missed opportunity stories over a season, but that won’t stop Posh folk wondering what might have been.
Three more points would (probably) have seen them win promotion from League One and it was just one extra point for a place in the play-offs.
If only...
1) ...Posh had not thrown away a 2-0 lead and a 3-2 lead (against 10 men) away at Wycombe after playing very well for most of the game. Wycombe’s last minute equaliser arrived following a very questionablepenaltyawardaswell.
2) ...Siriki Dembele had not been sent off at Lincoln soon after coming on enabling the home side to claim an undeserved last-minute winner.
3)... Ivan Toney had not missed a sitter, by his standards, in the final minute of a 0-0 home draw with Gillingham. Posh didn’t deserve to win that game, but in the end they should have done.
4)... Toney hadn’t picked up a couple of needless cautions in back-to-back 4-0 home wins at a time when Posh were flying. Posh picked up just one point from the two games he missed because of suspension.
5)... And in one of them, at promotion rivals Fleetwood, Toney’s replacement Mo Eisa failed to convert an early penalty in a game Posh went on to lose. Scoring first against Fleetwood was always likely to be crucial.
6)... Posh hadn’t enjoyed their traditionally hopeless
Christmas period, but also a miserable start to the season. Posh lost their opening two matches to Fleetwood and Oxford, two teams who went on to become key promotion rivals.
7)... Posh hadn’t conceded a 94th-minute equaliser at home to Ipswich who turned out to be a poor old team. Sir
Alex Ferguson watched that gameandtheoneatFleetwood to confirm his status as a jinx.
8)... Posh hadn’t turned a 2-0 lead into a 2-2 draw at Tranmere just days after thumping Rochdale 6-0.
9)... Posh hadn’t missed a succession of chances when losing 1-0 at a poor AFC Wimbledon side .
