The draw brings back great memories

-

The memories would have come flooding back for Posh fans of a certain age after the FA Cup fourth round draw.

Posh were handed a home tie against Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers, a team, they’ve only faced once before in the competition.

But a 2-1 second round win for Posh in a replay at London Road in November, 1964 was followed by a triumphant run to the quarter-finals (sixth round) where they lost 5-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

That is still the best FA Cup run in Posh history, but it almost didn’t happen.

Posh had drawn 3-3 at Loftus Road in the first tie, but trailed 1-0 going into the final minute of the replay when Peter Deakin equalised.

Deakin, who still lives locally, then popped in the winning goal in the second minute of extra time in front of more than 15,000 fans.

Deakin, Ron Barnes and Peter McNamee had scored for Posh at Loftus Road.

Posh had beaten Salisbury 5-1 in the first round and went on to win 3-0 at Chesterfield in the third round to land a glamour tie at home to Arsenal in the fourth round.

Posh won that match 2-1 and it remains the only time they have beaten a top flight club in the FA Cup.

Posh then drew 0-0 at home to Swansea in the fifth round in front of 30,096, a club record attendance that still stands, before Deakin struck again in a 2-0 win in the replay at the Vetch Field.

Posh beat QPR 2-1 in a Championship fixture at the Weston Homes Stadium in October thanks to second-half goals from Harrison Burrows and Siriki Dembele.

Dembele scored the winner in the final minute.

Bali Mumba became the third Posh player to score on his club debut (when that debut was an FA Cup tie) and the first since the 1948-49 season!

Last Saturday was the first time Posh had won a third round FA Cup tie when they had been exempt until that round.

They had previously lost to Spurs (twice), Sunderland and Norwich.
