Last-gasp loss for Moore’s not-so-merry men

-

Nothing went right for Peterborough Lions as they went down 14-10 in a Midlands Division One fixture at improving Market Harborough last weekend.

They did collect one bonus point for losing a close game, but that was scant consolation for a last-gasp defeat, one broken arm, three concussions, one red card and one very unhappy chairman.

Chairman Andy Moore was nonplussed by some of the refereeing decisions he witnessed with his side appearing to have a clear try disallowed at a crucial juncture in the second half.

‘Held up’ was the verdict as it was in the final play of the game when Charlie Frankham tried to burrow over the line to give Lions a second win on the spin. Harborough had only taken the lead two minutes from time and after Weir Filikitonga had been shown a red card.

It was a feisty affair throughout with a couple of yellows brandished in the first-half for offences which could easily have been punished by red cards.

Harborough scored first with a converted try but a try from Katilimoni Tuipolotu after he’d broken off the back of a maul, which was converted by Sam Dumigan, made it 7-7 at half-time.

A Dumigan penalty early in the second-half looked to have won it for Lions until they conceded that late try.

MIDLANDS LEAGUE ROUND-UP Oundle delivered a gallant Premier Division display against Syston at Occupation Road, but were cruelly beaten by a converted try from the last play of the game.

Syston led early, but a try from Said Sait and a conversion and penalty from Harry Key saw them 10-5 in front.

The visitors equalised with an unconverted score before snatching victory in the last second. Oundle are bottom with one win from 14 matches ahead of Saturday’s trip to Paviors.

Bourne lost for just the second time in Division Three, 16-6 at home to Dunstablians, while Stamford scored a last minute try to beat Northampton Casuals 15-12 in Division Two.
