Great news for Posh as Jack’s back
Posh have received a surprise boost on the injury front ahead of Saturday’s tough Championship game at West Bromwich Albion.
Striker Jack Marriott has recovered from a hamstring injury and should be in the matchday squad at the Hawthorns.
Marriott, who scored 33 goals in his one previous season at Posh in 2017-18 to earn a £4 million move to Derby County, returned to the club on a free transfer in the summer after accepting a significant paycut.
But he wasn’t fit for the start of the season and, after scoring his first goal of the season at Sheffield United on September 11, he limped out of the 3-1 defeat at Reading three days later.
His hamstring injury was described as ‘one of the worst I’ve seen,’ by Posh boss Darren Ferguson.
Fellow summer signing Joel Randall won’t be involved at West Brom and Ferguson admits he has a decision to make for the goalkeeper position following the arrival on loan of Steven Benda to challenge current number one Dai Cornell.
Cornell started on Saturday, but blundered to help Coventry take the lead before settling down to play very well.
“I do have a decision to make with the goalkeeper,” Ferguson said. “Steven didn’t train with us until the Thursday before the Coventry game because Swansea wanted us to wait until they had signed his replacement.
“That was frustrating as I have brought Steven here to give Dai some serious competition. Dai held his hands up for the crucial first goal on
Saturday, but he then went on to make some excellent saves to keep the score down. He’s done well for us to be fair.”
Benda’s height (he’s 6ft 4in) could win him a place against a dangerous set-piece team.
