The unlikely Posh heroes!
Celebrity Posh fan Adrian Durham of TalkSPORT radio reminded Darren Ferguson’s squad they would be ‘heroes’ if they managed to get the club out of trouble in the Championship this season.
Often it’s not the biggest names or the best players who turn into Posh heroes as this list proves.
1) Left-winger Garry Kimble’s goal famously knocked Liverpool out of the Rumbelows Cup in December, 1991. His reward was to lose his place to Bobby Barnes the following month and to be released at the end of the sesaon sparking the great ET headline of ‘Kop Killer goes free.’
2) Loan striker Steve Cooper’s one and only Posh goal secured a 2-1 win at Huddersfield and a trip to Wembley for the first time in the club’s history.
3) Substitute Lee Howarth made a brilliant goalline clearance at Wembley and 60 seconds later Posh scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 play-off final win over Stockport.
4) Midfielder James Wesolowki’s goal-saving tackle was as important to the
League One play off win over MK Dons at London Road as the goals of Grant McCann and Craig Mackail-Smith.
4) Posh lost the first seven games of the Championship season and then Emile Sinclair’s hat-trick sealed a 3-1 win at leaders Hull. They were the only goals he scored all season.
6) It was a header from defender George Berry that sealed a 2-2 Posh draw at Chesterfield and clinched promotion from Division Four.
7) On-loan Jonathan Obika’s only Posh goal sealed a win over Brentford that kickstarted Darren Ferguson’s second triumphant spell at Posh.
8) On-loan Davide Petrucci’s only club goal was a stunner that helped beat Leicester in a Championship fixture.
9) Ethan Hamilton came on for star man Jack Taylor with Posh 3-0 down at home to Lincoln. Hamilton helped turn the game and Posh drew 3-3 to seal promotion.
