Fergie now has the firepower to shoot Posh up the table

Manager Darren Ferguson now believes he has the firepower at his disposal to shoot Posh up the Championship table in the final 20 games of the season.

Posh are the joint second lowest scorers in the division with just 23 goals from 26 matches, but the arrival of Callum Morton and the return to fitness of Jack Marriott has given the Posh boss hope.

Posh scored twice in an away game for the first time since October at Birmingham City on Tuesday. Marriott scored and Morton won a penalty that Jonson ClarkeHarris converted.

Star forward Siriki Dembele missed that game because of injury, but Kwame Poku deputised in great style on his first Championship start of the season, while summer signing Joel Randall could be available for the visit of Sheffield United to the Weston Homes Stadium on Saturday as could Dembele.

Ferguson said: “I have good options up top. Callum wants to run. He did it brilliantly at Birmingham. He made a great run diagonally across the defenders to create a scoring opportunity for himself, but the keeper saved it. Then for the penalty, he’s just run at people and made the defender commit the foul.

“We knew we needed to strengthen certain areas of the team and you saw tonight why we’ve done it. Callum is going to give us a different energy and he’s got height and is a good finisher. Jack Marriott will bring his undoubted quality. Jonno (Clarke-Harris) enjoyed playing with Jack.

“We’ve not really had two out and out strikers this season so hopefully that makes a difference. You see the quality Marriott gives you and it’s been sorely missed. He is an out and out finisher. He always hits the target .

“Kwame Poku was also excellent. The boy played really, really well both on and off the ball. “

Morton was pleased with his 30-minute debut at St Andrews. “What I’m good at is what you saw at Birmingham,” Morton said. “I felt this team’s style of play would suit me and I was happy with how I did after getting on. I was never going to be at my sharpest after six weeks out.

“We need to work on seeing games out, but we know what’s at stake on Saturday and we will be ready.”

Defender Ronnie Edwards faces a late fitness test after missing the Birmingham game with a head injury.
