City of Peterborough breathed life into their relegation battle in National North Division One with a fantastic 6-2 win over local rivals Cambridge City at Bretton Gate last weekend.

It was a first win of the season for City and few would have predicted it would come in such style as six different scorers delivered an emphatic and thoroughly deserved win.

City were 3-0 up before conceding twice to a slick short corner routine towards the end of the third quarter, but any concerns about a nervy finish were dispelled by a dramatic late onslaught.

The win lifted City off the bottom and within one point of safety.

It’s a bit of momentum as they approach tough games at third-placed Cardiff & Met and at home to second-placed Nottingham University.

Cardiff won 10-1 at City early in the season and can call on several Welsh international players.

Matt Porter blasted City in front against Cambridge and Ben Newman’s expertly-taken close-range volley and a Paul Hillsdon short corner strike looked to have sealed the win before the visitors converted two set-pieces to take momentum into the final quarter.

But City dug in, stayed positive and were rewarded with goals from the outstanding Alex Boxall, captain Joe Finding and youngster Matt Goddley.

Finding, who had earlier hit a post from a short corner, converted a penalty flick after City thirds stayed top of Division Two with a 5-1 success at Cambridge City fourths. Dan Barkworth hit a hat-trick.

Long Sutton held thirdplaced Kettering to a 4-4 draw with Gary Hales claiming a hat-trick and Josh Fyson scoring a late equaliser.

Spalding seconds moved off the bottom of the table by bagging just a second win of the season.

Pete Wright scored the only goal of the game against St Ives seconds.

There’s no stopping Spalding firsts at the top of Division One. They smashed Sudbury 12-0 after racing into a 7-0 halftime lead.

Joe Rogers and Stu Cunnington both scored four with James Mayhew (2), Jacob Baker and Tom Amess also on target. Spalding are now five points clear of second-placed Harleston.
