Peterborough Phantoms proved again they can compete with the best National League sides by winning at leaders Telford Tigers for the second time this season on Sunday.

Slava Koulikov’s men won a thrilling penalty shootout after a tense and tight 1-1 draw.

It was the second dramatic win of the weekend for Phantoms who also beat lowly Bees 5-4 after extra time at Planet Ice on Saturday.

Phantoms, who have moved up a place to sixth, will hope to carry their good form into a Friday night fixture at bottom club Raiders and at home to third-placed Swindon on Sunday (5.30pm).

Nathan Salem equalised for Phantoms at Telford with just under three minutes of normal time remaining.

Salem then converted the vital penalty shot which was followed by a fine save from netminder Jordan Marr to seal the extra point for the city side.

Marr had excelled in five minutes of extra time dominated by Telford. The Tigers had opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Phantoms were eventually rewarded for a fine final period display.

Phantoms had enjoyed a rollercoaster ride at Planet Ice against the Bees. The visitors led 2-0 before Phantoms got their noses in front 3-2 during the second period.

Bees went 4-3 up in the final period, but Nathan Pollard equalised on the powerplay with just two minutes to go and Duncan Speirs bagged the game-clinching goal after pouncing on captain Will Weldon’s fine pass at a time when the visitors had two players in the sinbin.

Weldon, Petr Stepanek and Speirs also scored for Phantoms.
