Local youngsters rock up and race at music festival venue

A dozen Peterborou­gh & Nene Valley AC youngsters were in Kent on Saturday, representi­ng their county school teams at the English Schools Cross Country Championsh­ip, writes Barry Warne.

The event wás staged at The Hop Farm just outside Tonbridge, a venue better known for rock music festivals.

On this occasion the feedback was good as several of the locals impressed at the prestigiou­s event.

Seb Beedell finished 50th intermedia­te boy while Ted Ash placed 79th.

Harry Hewitt, who won the senior men’s Frostbite League race at Huntingdon this winter, was 60th in the senior boys race.

Erin Cox placed 84th in the intermedia­te girls race with Aoife Glasswell 149th, Hannah Taylor 190th and Olivia Walker 301st

The junior girls race saw Erin Walker finish 108th ahead of 210th placed Evie Hemmings and Faith Perkins in 278th.

Senior girl Josie Knight placed 180th with Lottie Hemmings finishing 199th.

Peterborou­gh based Hunts AC members Dylan Tomaselli and Joseph Reindel finished as193th and 248th senior boys.

TOP 10 FINISH FOR BRAWN

Peterborou­gh & Nene Valley AC’s Kirk Brawn finished ninth in the Ashby 20 on Sunday.

Brawn ran a time of 1:59.01 on the undulating Ashby-dela-Zouch course.

BURTON’S BEST RUN FOR A WHILE

Hugh Burton ran his quickest half marathon in 10 years at Stowmarket on Sunday.

The Yaxley Runners vice chairman went under 90 minutes by the smallest possible margin as he clocked 89.59 for 36th place.

SUMMER RACE DETAILS

A summer of Wednesday evening 5km racing beckons, with the Barney 5k kicking it all off on June 8 at Ferry Meadows.

And the Peterborou­gh 5km Grand Prix series is back after a two year hiatus.

The series starts at Eye on June 22. This will be followed by races at Stamford on July 6, Ferry Meadows on July 20, Werrington on August 3 and back to Ferry Meadows for the August 17 finale.

If runners can’t wait until then, the Harrier League 5km series is due to take place on the evenings of April 13, April 27, May 11 and May 25 at Lynch Wood.

These handicap races serve as a handy sharpener to the busy summer schedule.
