FIVE THINGS FOR YOUR WEEK...
ELTON’S BIG NIGHT Elton John at the BBC, Saturday, BBC2, 8.35pm:
Saturday night’s alright for watching a whole evening of programmes dedicated to egendary singersongwriter Elton John. It begins with this compilation, which draws on performances and interviews from the BBC archives, taking in shows including The Old Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops. It’s followed by the documentary The Making of Elton John: Madman Across the Water, which explores his formative years and rise to stardom during the 1970s, the concert Live at Hyde Park, and a BBC One Session from LSO St Luke’s in London.
HI AGAIN Hi-De-Hi!: All the Laughs & More, Saturday, Channel 5, 7.45pm:
It was one of the most successful sitcoms of the 1980s, running for nine series with regular audiences of 16 million, winning a Bafta for Best Comedy Series in 1984. This programme pays tribute to Hi-De-Hi!, telling the story of the much-loved comedy, showing classic scenes and interviewing cast and crew. We discover that Butlin’s, the real-life inspiration for the series, were not impressed with the show, find out how iconic characters like Ted Bovis and Gladys Pugh were cast, and hear how cleaner and wannabe yellowcoat Peggy was brought to life by Su Pollard.
DANCE FINAL Dancing o n Ice, ITV/STV Sunday 7pm:
Two weeks ago, Connor Ball and Kye Whyte were voted out in double elimination after losing out to Kimberley Wyatt in tense three-way skate-off. Now Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby host the grand final, with the last three celebrities – Wyatt, along with Brendan Cole and Regan Gascoigne – and their professional partners, performing routines, including the iconic Bolero. There’s also a return to the ice for this year’s skating stars and a performance from judges Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
HOT HOLIDAYS Holidaying with Jane McDonald: The Caribbean, C5, Sunday 9pm:
The ‘Wakefield Wonder’ embarks on the trip of a lifetime, beginning in Barbados. After the obligatory sandals off, sand-between-the-toes moment, Jane bumps into two fellow Brits from Yorkshire. Together, they embark on our first must-do trip – snorkelling and swimming with protected turtles. Jane then joins tour guide Dawn Lisa for a Jeep safari before some cave swimming – an enchanting experience under a coral roof. As well as beaches, Barbados is known for its fine dining, so Jane bags a table with two other fellow holiday makers at exclusive beach side restaurant The Lone Star.
FIGHT FOR THE FALKLANDS Falklands War: The Untold Story, C4, Sunday 9pm:
On the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War, this documentary, part of Channel 4’s Secret History strand, reveals the untold story of the conflict that saw Britain send nearly 30,000 soldiers, sailors and aircrew 8000 miles to the South Atlantic to reclaim the Falklands after invasion by Argentina. The head of the SAS in the Falklands, Sir Michael Rose, speaks publicly for the first time about how the task force came close to defeat, while ground troops share their experiences.
