The Peterborough Evening Telegraph
A performance of hope
A reminder of the power of music
With much of our news dominated by the war in Ukraine a recent story demonstrated that even in midst of terrible destruction, fear and heartache, music has brought some comfort and hope to those caught up in the fighting.
In the country’s second city of Kharkiv, the metro station now regularly used as a bomb shelter - was briefly turned into a ‘pop up’ concert platform, with a group of classical musicians playing for bystanders to mark the start of the Kharkiv Music Festival (pictured) . Members of the audience were clearly moved by the performance and appreciated the sense of calm and relative sense of normality this musical interlude provided.
Watching the video footage from the comfort and safety of Peterborough it was difficult to fully appreciate the impact of this act, but it offered a moving demonstration of the determination of the Ukrainian people to carry on with their lives despite the current hardship, with music offering some welcome respite from the violence.
In recent history music, has certainly played a huge role in previous conflicts, bringing solace, warmth and hope to listeners by uplifting dampened spirits and often bringing comfort to those in need. Later, commemorations and remembrances of these events are invariably supported by a programme of music from the period, unlocking memories and stirring the emotions.
The coming together of musicians and an audience in the Kharkiv metro was also a fine reminder of the power of music - for healing, entertainment and community - and the important work of training young musicians for the future.
If you have a love of music, and can volunteer some valuable time, you too could play a part in this important work here in the city.
