Posh complete a six-point weekend as they show top six Championship form!

Posh boss Grant McCann believes his side have shown top six Championship form over the last eight matches.

McCann was basking in the delight of a six-point Easter weekend as a dramatic late win at home to Blackburn Rovers was followed by a season-extending success at relegation rivals Barnsley.

It’s a run of form that’s not likely to save Posh, but the manager based his optimistic opinion on performances as well as results.

“The boys have put an unbelievable shift in over the last eight games,” McCann said. “We have picked up 13 points and we probably should have got 14 or more. Over the course of the season, that would put you on 70 points with six matches to go - that’s how competitive we have been.

“We’ve done all we can over Easter by winning our two games and all we can do now is win our remaining three and see where it takes us.

“It wasn’t the best of games at Barnsley. It was a scrappy and tense affair. We weren’t great on the ball, but I’m really pleased with the way we dug in and stayed strong.”

Posh started each half slowly at Oakwell and did well to avoid conceding.

Barnsley struck the crossbar in the first minute through Domingos Quina before Posh ‘keeper Dai Cornell made a superb fingertip save to thwart Carlton Morris.

But Posh took the lead when Jack Marriott finished well after accepting a short pass from Sammie Szmodics in the 26th minute.

Posh had to defend stoutly under heavy pressure in the second-half, but eventually settled down, helped by the introduction of rapid RickyJade Jones from the bench.

It was Jones who won the corner that Harrison Burrows delivered for Jack Taylor to head home 15 minutes from time, even though Frankie Kent, and then Szmodicx, did their best to claim it!
