Posh players have been lining up to sing the praises of manager Grant McCann. Posh have picked up 13 points in 11 Championship matches since McCann replaced Darren Ferguson at the end of February with 11 of those points arriving in the last six matches. from three wins and two draws.

McCann is unlikely to steer

Posh to safety this season, but it’s clear his methods have found favour among his inherited playing squad.

Sammie Szmodics was a key player in a promotion from League One under Ferguson last season, but had lost his place in the team ahead of the change of manager.

“The new manager’s man management is so different,” Szmodics said. “You can speak to him like he’s your friend, but you also respect him because he’s the manager.

“He’s really drilled on how we react when we lose possession or make a mistake. If you react well he’s happy. He doesn’t get angry. He’s instilled a lot of confidence. We have a young group who are hungry to learn and work hard for the badge and for him.” Ferguson signed goalkeeper Dai Cornell from Ipswich Town last summer and he has become established as the club’s number one. He delivered one of his best performances for Posh in the 2-0 Easter Monday win at Barnsley.

“There’s a real togetherness in this group,” Cornell said. “We are battling for each other and we are battling for the gaffer.

“The performances have been a lot better in the last month. If we’d shown this sort of form all season we wouldn’t be in the bottom three now.

“The manager has brought intensity and professionalism with him. Every single session of every single day is intense and it’s all very professional now in what we eat and how we travel.

“It was a real tough battle at Barnsley and I was pleased to be able to help the boys with a couple of saves. I’ve been a bit disappointed with my form in the last couple of games.

“Overall I think I’ve done okay. There are always some goals you are disappointed with, but that’s the life of a goalkeeper.”

Szmodics: ‘You can speak to the manager like he’s your mate.’
